Meet Clarence L

Remembering housing's coolest guy

On Dec. 8, we lost a resident and dear friend: Clarence L, 93. Clarence and his wife, Sylvia, have lived with us at the GHA for about five years.

Born in St. Mary, Jamaica, Clarence lived most of his life in Kingston, Jamaica, where he worked as a Driving Instructor with Jamaica Omnibus Services and received numerous awards for safety driving. He later lived in England –  where he served in the British Royal Air Force in the 1940s and received a Medal of War. Later, Clarence and Sylvia relocated to New York and then moved to Gainesville.

Family members and friends remember Clarence as a very likable person. “If you asked him for a hug, he would open his arms ready to embrace you." said  Marjorie R, Clarence's daughter. “He was a cool, laid-back person and a joy to be around.”

He was proud of his two daughters and his four sons, as well as his many loving grandchildren, nephews and other friends. “As long as we were all happy, Clarence was happy. He was our STAR dad. He always kept peace in our home,” said Marjorie.

The family plans a ‘celebration of his life’ in the form of a ‘Family Reunion’ next summer (around June or July), so that family and friends from afar will be able to attend.

We at the Gainesville Housing Authority would like to remember Clarence and his family during this difficult season, hoping that the many wonderful memories of Clarence carry them with grace into the days ahead.
