Meet Anthony

Coming to work was like coming home

When Anthony W recently came to pour a patch of concrete parking area at Green Hunter Apartments, it brought a smile to his face. That’s because he had once spent a lot of time at Green Hunter Apartments, where many of his best friends lived.

He spent even more time at Harrison Square Apartments, where he and his family lived in the 1970s and 1980s. In fact, his family was among the earliest residents at Harrison Square. Anthony recalled hanging out there as one of his favorite activities. “We set on the steps with a bunch of friends and we’d have a good time,” he said.

Having bounced around school as a kid – from Fair Street School to Gainesville Middle School to Johnson High School and then East Hall High School (where he graduated in 1979) – Anthony appreciates the positive influences he has had in his own life that later helped him overcome obstacles and eventually build his own company, Winter’s Concrete Finishing. Today, he employs six people and takes on jobs as far away as Virginia or Florida.

Anthony visits both Green Hunter and Harrison Square apartments whenever he can to visit old friends and sometimes he mentors neighborhood kids who seem on the wrong track. He lets them know that he made it iby getting his diploma, and through hard work and determination, and he encourages them to stick with school and apply themselves. “I try to give back,” he said.
