Meet Eddie Mae

She rejoices in her friend

Eddie Mae O, 89, lives in an assisted living facility today, but she lived for a decade in Tower Heights, where she was renowned for her fine garden and succulent flowers. Eddie Mae is quick to say her time at Tower Heights was good time, and then, she is equally quick to say why it was good.

Because of a friend, she said.

Her friend has seen her through many situations – some quite dangerous. For example, she was once thrown in a deep pool of water and couldn’t swim. Yet she climbed out just fine, she said. She was in two violent car crashes, and “didn’t get a scratch.”

She had long received help from unseen hands. “The man up there did it,” she said, pointing upward.

Today, Eddie Mae doesn't get out a lot, but she still enjoys occasional Sunday trips to her favorite church, St. John’s Baptist Church in Gainesville, Ga.

Though her family is no longer living, including her son, she does not despair, but instead rejoices in her friends – especially the one that has helped her so many times. “I trust the Lord,” she said.

Raised on a farm near Winder, Eddie Mae worked in the poultry processing industry as well as babysitting. She still dabbles around the yard today, when the weather is fit. "I turn my wheelchair into a truck," she said.
