Riverkeeper and Boys & Girls Club clean up Melrose

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) teamed up with the Melrose Boys and Girls Club as part of a local trash sweep to beautify and preserve our area. About 20 Melrose kids (doubtless the coolest kids around) cleaned the area along Flat Creek to the Gainesville Housing Authority's Innovation Station.

They rounded up more than 100 lbs of loose trash, tires and litter in the effort.

The CRK launched a monthly program at Melrose Apartments in Sept. 2016 in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club Monday-Friday during after-school hours.

The CRK, with Janet Westervelt, brings nature programming to approxiately 35 GHA kids in the first through fifth grades, concentrating on the Chattahoochee Water Basin, water pollution and prevention, wildlife (see the photos of local lake and river fish prints the kids made to learn about these fish), conservation and realted nature lessons.

Earlier this year, the CRK took about 30 GHA kids in the RISE program aboard the Echota II, a floating classroom that Elachee Nature Science Center and CRK use to educate local kids on environmental issues.

The CRK recently opened a satelitte office in Gainesville on the square.
